There are 6 328 postal codes scattered across 35 007 communes, according to the latest La Poste publication (May 2026).
4 207 postal codes span multiple communes (66,5 %). The remaining 2 121 postal codes cover just one commune. Most postal codes stay within a single department, except for 16 postal codes that span two.
Conversely, 394 municipalities have multiple postal codes, or 1,1 %. These are mostly large communes like Paris or Lyon, but also some smaller ones that have been administratively split or merged.
